Fix

Internet not working

Step 1 of 3

Look at the lights on your modem

The modem is the box from your internet provider. Find the light labeled LOS.

  1. Look at the lights on your modem

The modem is the box from your internet provider. Find the light labeled LOS.

POWER PON LOS INTERNET Red = problem on the provider's side
LOS is red? That is a problem on the provider's side. Call your provider's support line.
  2. Unplug the modem for 30 seconds

Plug it back in, then wait 2–3 minutes until the lights settle.

  3. Turn WiFi off on your phone or laptop, then on again

Choose your home WiFi name again.

From basic to technician

Technician fixes (advanced)

The simple steps didn’t help? A technician would try these next, in this order. Stop as soon as the problem is fixed. Commands marked “as administrator”: right-click Start › Terminal (Admin).

  1. Find where the connection breaks

Test one link at a time. Other devices on the same WiFi also have no internet → the problem is the modem or the provider. Only this device → the problem is the device. A phone on mobile data works but WiFi doesn’t → modem or provider.

  2. Read the modem lights

LOS or PON red/blinking = the fibre line to your house is cut or not registered: only the provider can fix this, call them with your customer number. Internet light off with PON steady = the provider’s login failed, a restart usually fixes it. All normal but no internet = the provider has an outage in your area.

  3. Test step by step on Windows

Replace 192.168.1.1 with the Default Gateway the first line shows. Gateway fails → the laptop can’t reach the modem (WiFi problem). 8.8.8.8 fails → the modem has no internet (provider). Only nslookup fails → a DNS problem, see the next step. An IPv4 address starting with 169.254 means the modem didn’t give the laptop an address: restart the modem.

    ipconfig | findstr /i "IPv4 Gateway"
    ping 192.168.1.1 -n 4
    ping 8.8.8.8 -n 4
    nslookup google.com
  4. Clear DNS and get a new address

Clears saved website addresses and asks the modem for a fresh IP address. Safe; the WiFi drops for a few seconds.

    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
  5. Change the DNS server

    If websites fail but ping 8.8.8.8 › works, the provider’s DNS is broken. Settings › Network & internet › Wi-Fi › Hardware properties › DNS server assignment › Edit › Manual › IPv4 on › Preferred 1.1.1.1, Alternate 8.8.8.8 › Save.

  6. Reset the network stack (as administrator), then restart

Fixes broken network settings left by VPNs, “internet booster” apps or malware. Restart the laptop afterwards.

    netsh winsock reset
    netsh int ip reset
VPN apps may need to be reinstalled afterwards.
