Fix

Websites won't open, but WiFi is connected

Step 1 of 3

Try another website

Open google.com. If other websites work, only that one site has a problem. Try it again later.

The simulation shows Windows in English, like most laptops.

  1. Try another website

Open google.com. If other websites work, only that one site has a problem. Try it again later.

  2. Restart the laptop

Click Start, then the Power icon, then Restart.

    StartPowerRestart
  3. Clear the DNS memory

Click Start, type cmd and open Command Prompt. Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

Safe. It only clears a list of website addresses the laptop remembers.

From basic to technician

Technician fixes (advanced)

The simple steps didn’t help? A technician would try these next, in this order. Stop as soon as the problem is fixed. Commands marked “as administrator”: right-click Start › Terminal (Admin).

  1. Test DNS against a public server

If the first fails but the second works, your provider’s DNS is the problem: set DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 (see “No internet” › Technician fixes).

    nslookup google.com
    nslookup google.com 1.1.1.1
  2. Check the hosts file

Read-only. Normally this shows nothing (or only localhost lines). Lines pointing well-known sites to odd addresses were added by malware or an old program: open the file in Notepad as administrator and remove them.

    Get-Content C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts | Select-String -NotMatch '^#'
  3. Look for a leftover proxy

Read-only. “Direct access” and ProxyEnable 0x0 are normal. A proxy you didn’t set up (often from free VPNs or adware) blocks websites: turn it off in Settings › Network & internet › Proxy.

    netsh winhttp show proxy
reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable
  4. Certificate errors on every site

“Your connection is not private” everywhere usually means the clock is wrong (fix Date & time) or an antivirus/firewall is inspecting HTTPS. Try turning off that antivirus’s “web shield” for a moment to test.
