An app crashes or is slow: clear its cache

Step 1 of 3

Settings › Apps › choose the app

For example the app that keeps closing by itself.

Menu names may be slightly different on your phone brand.

  1. Settings › Apps › choose the app

    For example the app that keeps closing by itself.

  2. Tap Storage & cache

    You see the size of the cache and the data.

  3. Tap Clear cache

    Safe: your login and data stay. Open the app again.

    Clear storage resets the app as if newly installed. For WhatsApp, back up your chats first.

Cache vs data

Cache is temporary files (images, page pieces) that are rebuilt automatically. Data/storage holds your login, settings and app files; clearing it is like reinstalling.

Still crashing

Update the app in the Play Store, then restart the phone. Still crashing? Uninstall and reinstall it, or try Safe Mode to see if another app interferes.

Android System WebView

Many apps crashing at once is usually Android System WebView or Google Play Services. Update both in the Play Store.
