The whole laptop is frozen

  2. Still stuck? Hold the power button for 10 seconds

    The laptop turns off. Wait a moment, then press the power button once to start it.

    Only do this when nothing else works. Unsaved work will be lost.
Technician fixes (advanced)

The simple steps didn’t help? A technician would try these next, in this order. Stop as soon as the problem is fixed. Commands marked “as administrator”: right-click Start › Terminal (Admin).

  1. Open the Reliability Monitor

    Shows a timeline of crashes and freezes. Red crosses mark failures; click one to see which app or driver failed and when. A repeated name (for example a graphics driver or one app) is your suspect.

  2. List unexpected shutdowns

    Read-only. Event 41 (Kernel-Power) and 6008 mean the laptop stopped without shutting down properly: a hard freeze, power loss or overheating. Many of them in a row point to hardware (heat, RAM, battery) rather than one app.

  3. Test the memory (RAM)

    Choose Restart now and check for problems. The test runs before Windows (10–20 minutes) and shows the result after you sign in. Any memory error = faulty RAM: a shop can replace or reseat it.

  4. Check heat

    A laptop that freezes after 10–30 minutes of heavy use, with a loud fan, is usually overheating. Use it on a hard table, clean the vents, and if it is more than 2–3 years old, ask a shop to clean the fan and replace the thermal paste.

  5. Update the BIOS and chipset from the maker

    Freezes that started with no clear cause are often fixed by a BIOS/firmware update from the laptop maker’s support page (or its app, such as MyASUS, Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant). Install chipset, graphics and storage (Intel RST) drivers from the same page.

    Keep the charger plugged in and don’t turn the laptop off during a BIOS update.
