Technical details (for the curious)
Shut down, Sleep, Restart
Shut down turns the laptop off. Sleep (or closing the lid) keeps your work in memory and wakes in seconds, but still uses a little battery. Restart turns it off and on again; use it when something misbehaves or after updates.
Why not to hold the power button
Holding the power button for 4–10 seconds forces it off without saving anything. Only do that if the laptop is completely frozen.
“Update and shut down”
If you see this, Windows installs updates before turning off. Let it finish and keep the charger plugged in.
