Technical details (for the curious)
The touchpad key
The Fn + F-key with a touchpad picture turns the touchpad off at driver or firmware level. That is why it only works when the laptop maker’s driver/app is installed.
The touchpad driver
Modern touchpads are I2C HID devices (“HID-compliant touch pad” in Device Manager › Human Interface Devices). If it is missing or has a yellow mark, install the Serial IO / I2C and chipset drivers from the laptop maker’s site.
Moves but no gestures
If the pointer moves but two-finger gestures don’t work, Windows is using a generic mouse driver. Look for “Precision Touchpad” in Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Touchpad; if it is missing, install the touchpad driver from the laptop maker’s site.
