From basic to technician
Technician fixes (advanced)
The simple steps didn’t help? A technician would try these next, in this order. Stop as soon as the problem is fixed. Commands marked “as administrator”: right-click Start › Terminal (Admin).
Does Windows see the drive at all? (as administrator)
Look for a disk with BusType USB. If it is there but not in This PC, it may have no drive letter or no partition (fix in Disk Management). If it isn’t listed at all, try another port, cable or computer.
Get-Disk | Select-Object Number, FriendlyName, BusType, Size, PartitionStyle, OperationalStatus
Give it a drive letter
Right-click Start › Disk Management › right-click the flash drive’s partition › Change Drive Letter and Paths › Add › choose a free letter.
Repair its file system (as administrator)
Replace E: with the drive’s letter. Use when Windows says the drive “needs to be scanned and fixed” or files won’t open.
chkdsk E: /f /x
If the drive holds important files, copy what you still can first.“RAW” or “You need to format the disk”
Click Cancel: formatting erases everything. Try CHKDSK first. If the files matter, free recovery tools (like Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery) or a data-recovery service can often still get them back.
Never format a drive whose files you still need.
Technical details (for the curious)
If it doesn’t show in This PC
Open Disk Management (right-click Start). If the drive is there without a letter, right-click › Change Drive Letter and Paths › Add. If it says “Unallocated” or “RAW”, the contents can’t be read; don’t format it if it holds important files.
The USB driver
Flash drives use Windows’ built-in driver (“USB Mass Storage Device”). If no USB device works at all, check Device Manager › Universal Serial Bus controllers for yellow marks and install the chipset driver.
Formats: FAT32, exFAT, NTFS
FAT32 works everywhere but can’t store files over 4 GB. exFAT suits big flash drives and works on Windows, Mac and TVs. NTFS is for drives used only with Windows.
