Technical details (for the curious)
Pairing vs connecting
Pairing = the two devices exchange a key once. Connecting = using that key every time. If the earphones are connected to your phone, the laptop can’t connect: turn off Bluetooth on the phone first.
Remove and pair again
If the earphones appear but won’t connect: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › the earphones › Remove device, then add them again. This creates a fresh key.
The Bluetooth driver
Device Manager › Bluetooth: the adapter (for example “Intel Wireless Bluetooth”) must be there without a yellow mark. Bluetooth and WiFi often share one chip, so both drivers usually come together from the laptop maker’s site.
Poor sound in meetings
When the earphone mic is used, Bluetooth switches to “Hands-Free” mode with low quality. For music choose the “Stereo” output; in meetings use the laptop mic so the earphone sound stays clear.
