Put the router in the middle of the house

Put it fairly high and in the open
On top of a cupboard or shelf, not on the floor, inside a cabinet or behind the TV.
Keep it away from metal, fish tanks and the microwave
Thick walls and water weaken WiFi a lot. Big or multi-storey house: use an extender or mesh.

Technical details (for the curious)
Why the signal gets weaker
WiFi is radio. Every brick or concrete wall reduces it, especially 5 GHz WiFi. Metal (fridge, steel cabinet) and water (fish tank) reflect or absorb it.
Antennas
For routers with external antennas: point one straight up and one tilted/sideways so coverage reaches other floors too.
Extender vs mesh
An extender is cheap but halves the speed. Mesh costs more, gives one WiFi name for the whole house and moves you between units smoothly.
