Technical details (for the curious)
Where does Windows get drivers?
Hardware makers (Intel, Realtek, NVIDIA, AMD and others) send their drivers to Microsoft to be tested and signed (WHQL). Drivers that pass are offered through Windows Update. Important ones install automatically; the rest appear under Optional updates.
“The best drivers are already installed”
This only means Windows found nothing newer on the laptop and on Windows Update. The laptop or graphics maker’s website can have a newer version. For graphics cards and games, the maker’s version is usually newer.
Check the version
Double-click the device in Device Manager and open the Driver tab. Compare Driver Date and Driver Version before and after the update.
If an update causes trouble
Windows keeps the previous driver. Use Roll Back Driver (there is a guide in this category) to go back.
