Technical details (for the curious)
Duplicate vs Extend
Duplicate shows the same picture on both screens, at the smaller screen’s resolution. Extend makes the TV a second screen: windows can be moved there, and PowerPoint can show speaker notes on the laptop.
Sound over HDMI
HDMI carries sound too. If the sound should come from the TV, choose the output named after the TV/monitor in Settings › System › Sound. It appears thanks to the “Intel Display Audio” or “NVIDIA High Definition Audio” driver.
No picture
Check the TV input (HDMI 1/2), try another cable and make sure the graphics driver is installed (not “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter”). A USB-C port only drives a screen if it has a display/DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol next to it.
