Technician fixes (advanced)

The simple steps didn’t help? A technician would try these next, in this order. Stop as soon as the problem is fixed. Commands marked “as administrator”: right-click Start › Terminal (Admin).

  1. Create the battery report

Opens a file on your Desktop. Compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity: below about 60% means the battery itself is worn and needs replacing.

    powercfg /batteryreport /output "$env:USERPROFILE\Desktop\battery.html"
  2. Find what keeps the laptop awake (as administrator)

Watches the laptop for 60 seconds (leave it alone) and lists errors such as devices that never sleep or programs that block power saving.

    powercfg /energy /output "$env:USERPROFILE\Desktop\energy.html" /duration 60
  3. See what is blocking sleep right now (as administrator)

Lists programs and devices currently preventing sleep, for example a browser playing audio or a stuck download.

    powercfg /requests
  4. Settings that matter most

Lower screen brightness, use Battery saver from 30%, set Power mode to “Best power efficiency” on battery, and in Settings › System › Power & battery › Battery usage look for apps using power in the background.
