Add up numbers in Excel (AutoSum)

Step 1 of 3

Click the empty cell under the numbers

That is where the total will appear.

The simulation shows Windows in English, like most laptops.

  1. Click the empty cell under the numbers

    That is where the total will appear.

  2. Click AutoSum (Σ) on the Home tab

    Excel picks the numbers above and writes =SUM(...).

    HomeAutoSum
  3. Press Enter

    The total appears. If you change a number above, the total updates by itself.

Technical details (for the curious)

Writing the formula yourself

Type =SUM(B2:B6): = starts a formula, B2:B6 means cells B2 to B6. Others: =AVERAGE(), =MAX() largest, =MIN() smallest.

Wrong total

Numbers aligned to the left are usually stored as text and are skipped. Select them › the yellow exclamation mark › Convert to Number.

See a total without a formula

Select the numbers: the sum, average and count appear in Excel’s bottom bar straight away.
